Types of modern dances. Dance Hustle

With the advent of the hustle, there was no need for long dance training, because in order to demonstrate virtuosity in discos, it is enough to learn just a few basic dance moves.

AT last years Hustle has gained extraordinary popularity: numerous schools and clubs appear, seminars are held, competitions are organized. The term "hustle" in translation from English literally means "turmoil, hustle, bustle." Perhaps the dance got its name precisely because of the lack of rigid, fixed requirements in it. Such simplicity and democracy contributed to the extraordinary popularity of the hustle, which is growing every year.

History of occurrence

The canonical history of the hustle begins in the late 60s and early 70s of the 20th century. In those days in America and Europe, discos with high-quality sound and bright flickering lights were gaining popularity. The dances at such evenings were of an arbitrary nature, the youth competed in originality and skill. The indispensable attire of young people were high platform shoes, flared trousers, hairstyles that imitated the African style.

At such discos, such dances as cha-cha-cha, salsa, mambo were already popular. The youth, who lacked the ability to dance them, arbitrarily combined movements from all these directions, simplified them, and supplemented them with other elements. And so the dance "Latino Hustle" or "Rope Hustle" was born.

In the USSR, the hustle appeared in the late 70s - early 80s. A fragment of this dance is shown in the Soviet film "Beloved Woman of the Mechanic Gavrilov."

Hustle competitions are regularly held in the modern dance world, both amateur and sports.

What is a Hustle?

The popularity of hustle all over the world is huge due to its democratic nature and the absence of rigid frameworks. This dance can be performed to any music and at any tempo. Hustle assumes the leading position of the partner, and the partner must adapt to the dance steps of the young man.

Hustle is a dance that incorporates many elements from other dance styles: rock and roll, latin, swing, ballroom dancing. A large role is given to improvisation, the ability to feel a partner. So, at some competitions, a section is provided in which partners dance with unfamiliar partners to unfamiliar music. Thus, it is possible to determine the ability of partners to interact with each other, the ability to immediately select movements that most fully correspond to the music.

Types of dance

In the course of hustle competitions, its following types were gradually formed:

hustle freestyle

hustle jack-n-jill

sports hustle (disco swing)

double hustle

ladies hustle

show hustle

Since the hustle is improvisational in nature, it is quite possible that other types of this dance will appear over time.

Hustle Features

The advantage of this dance is that almost everyone can learn it. In 10-15 lessons, anyone can learn the basic elements and hone their skills at the nearest disco, supplementing the basic hustle moves with their own.

The lack of clear schemes and rules contributes to the development of improvisation. The dance can be performed in a small space, which is especially true for clubs and discos.

Literally translated, hustle is a crush. The basis of the dance lies in the concept of leading and leading. This dance requires a tandem of two people, where the man plays the role of the leader, and the woman is the follower.
Hustle can rightly be considered a dance of interpersonal communication, since you can dance it even with strangers. You can master his technique in a few months, since the dance does not require people to possess special skills.
Hustle in Moscow

You can attend hustle classes even in the absence of a partner, since in the process of training, future dancers change in pairs. The dominant position in the dance is occupied by a man, setting the rhythm and direction, and the woman can only obey him. Only with such interaction of the two parties can a full-fledged dance based on improvisation be obtained.
Another indisputable advantage of the hustle is that it goes well with any genre of music.
At the same time, there are special styles in music, such as euro-pop and disco.

Other sides of the hustle

  • organizing themed hustle parties;
  • group visits to dance places;
  • holding thematic events.
People who attended hustle training for the first time will be able to observe improvements in dance technique after a month of active training. They will acquire the skills of moving to any rhythm of music and even with a partner far from choreography. In addition, hustle is a whole complex of physical activities that will always allow you to be in shape.

Girls who attend hustle classes will gain smoothness of movement, flexibility, a good, toned shape and sexuality. Men, on the other hand, will learn to be dominant, gain confidence and the ability to make extraordinary decisions. And although the male is the dominant side, the hustle is an interdependent dance that allows both sides to communicate through the movement of bodies, developing intuition and the ability to understand the thoughts of a partner.

In other words, hustle is a dance that gives a powerful impetus to interesting communication between two strangers or unfamiliar people.

Cultural development of the hustle

The hustle originated in the USA in the 80s and annually gained mass popularity around the world. This dance very quickly spread around almost all countries and by the end of the 80s it also ended up in Russia, where it became very popular. In the modern world, it is danced at youth discos, in clubs, and even various competitions are held, where a free exchange of partners is carried out, hitherto not met not only on the dance floor, but also in life. This approach further fuels the crazy excitement of interested spectators and the young dancers themselves.

Many are concerned about the question, what is the reason for its growing popularity? And everything is quite simple: its uniqueness lies in the fact that it does not need to be taught for a long time. In just 2-3 months, you will be able to move freely on the dance floor and get incredible pleasure from it.

Interpretation

Let's first understand the concept of what is a hustle? From the English word hustle "crush" - a pair dance based on pure improvisation and "leading". The second meaning of the word is "energy, frantic activity." This is a "social" dance - it means that its basis is a step to the count (1-2-3-4) and (1-2-3), and to any music. It does not require a sufficiently long training and makes it possible, after a relatively short practice, to move uncontrollably to anyone who wishes.

dance style

Hustle dance is far superior to almost all others in the whole world in terms of versatility. After all, he dances to the chosen music, at an arbitrary pace. It can be performed with a beloved partner or with unfamiliar people. It happens that it is carried out only by girls, when there are not enough men at the disco. The technique of ballroom and sports dancing takes years to learn, while hustle can be mastered in two months, it is also accessible to anyone who can somehow move to the music. It does not have clear defined rules and instructions; a person is able to learn its basic elements in 10-15 lessons. In addition, partners are allowed to invent their own movements, constantly experimenting and improving the technique. Because the only limitation will be the flight of your imagination.

sports hustle

If we are talking about it as a social dance, it is necessary to mention its sports component. A new stage in the further development of the direction is characterized by the appearance in society of a huge number of competitions for this event. In 2001, they created the Moscow Hustle Federation (MFH). But the most important turn in the international development of dance since 2000 is the annual World Championship, where couples from different countries perform on the same dance floor. Back to historical development dance direction. The first regular competition in these dances in Russia was the Hustle Virtuoso competition held in 1995. Creative and sports competitions are regularly held in this direction.

Since 2006, an organization has appeared that conducts international competitions, maintains a database of dancers and their ratings, assigns dancer skill classes - this is the Sports Hustle Association, ASH.

There are main divisions at competitions for this type of dance, which have been held in Russia since 2008:

  • Sports hustle, disco-fox, swing.
  • Freestyle.
  • Jack n jill.
  • Double

Jack-n-jill is a dance with a change of partners after each music and entry, which is unknown to the participants in advance. In this part, the dancers must show their practical ability to lead and interact in pairs, as well as correctly interpret the music, as they say on the fly. In Russia, they invented their priority direction of this dance style and called it “lady hustle”. The uniqueness is that both partners are girls. They can dance a pre-arranged show to music already chosen.

Canonical history

Before you find out what a hustle is, you need to go back many decades and plunge into the historical component of this concept. As you know, during the 70s in Europe and America, night discos with excellent sound and flickering lights were the favorite entertainment. In those years, dancing was improvisational, somewhat similar to the style performed by pop stars of the time (for example, the Jackson Five). Thus, a small group of young people and teenagers created their culture in New York by competing in dance competitions.

It is noteworthy that in 1973, at The Grand Ballroom disco, an unknown woman demonstrates a pair dance that does not have an official name. A simple step of six counts with the usual major movements, with inside and outside single turns. It was the birth of a new dance trend, which would later be called the hustle.

Master account

Following historical facts, the hustle was created in increments of "1-2-3-4-5-6". Thanks to Latin American dances, especially mamba, the “ball change” was added to the step, the score became “1-2-3 & 4-5-6”. Previously, there was a variety with a regular score of "1-2-3-4". Since 1975, in order to create a more spectacular dance in competitions, from the full score "1-2-3 & 4-5-6" the "1-2-3" part was discarded and only "4-5-6" or "1- 2-3".

Musical compositions

Quite often we hear such a phrase as rap hustle. Many do not know the true meaning of this word and use it in daily circulation, often confusing their interlocutors. Naturally, most of all there are questions related to the word "hustle" (in English hustle). And by the way, the letter "t" does not need to be pronounced, since it is not readable in translation. As for the word, it is usually interpreted in different ways. This is a pair dance with crazy, wild movements with an unfamiliar partner. And there is another concept that sounds like a hustler. This is a person who earns a lot of money by resorting to illegal and dishonest methods. In addition, there is the song "Rap is a hustle" performed by Lyon and Smokey Mo. As it is already clear, for each person this word in rap carries a personal semantic load and a philosophical idea.

To begin with, let's find out what does the concept of ama hustle mean in a song? There is an opinion that this is a dark-skinned man in an expensive fur coat, hung with diamonds and gold, in other words, luxury. He drives exclusively on precious cars, and treats money with complete disdain. The expression amahastla was borrowed from of English language- Im a hustla. The translator interprets this phrase as "clear kid". On the basis of this concept, the popular American rap artist Jay-Z, together with Cassidy, recorded the song "Ama Hustle". In the track, the guys talk about the hard fate of black street rappers, about their existence, about boundless envy and fatigue, and, of course, about big money and drugs.

In addition, this concept was used in his work by a benchmark with the pseudonym Botanist. In February 2017, he recorded a song called "MS Padre Hustle". This composition talks about all the author's favorite things, what he does in his simple day and how everything will be fine tomorrow. There is no extremely deep meaning here, but visually it seems that the performer has lost something (and we are not talking about material things now) and is trying with all his might to find it.

Discos

Hustle discos are a music and dance party that anyone can join and have an interesting time. If you don’t know how to dance at all, it’s better, of course, to take a two-month training. In this case, it is easier for girls, they only have to follow their partner, while the man plays the role of a leader. Therefore, it is better for guys to know at least the basics of the dance. The main thing is to develop boundless confidence in yourself, and then no one will understand that you have been doing it recently. The special charm of the dance is that it is completely built on improvisation, you do not need to memorize specific movements and what follows. Hustle discos will give you new acquaintances, a new life, and allow you to expand your circle of interests.

These events can be held both in small bars and cafes, and in large halls. It is customary to dance on it with different companions and partners, so you can even come without a partner and calmly find yourself a partner for the whole evening. It is at such easy and relaxed meetings that it is really easy to make an acquaintance, which in the end can become life-changing, and you will find the love of your life. After all, as we know, common interests and hobbies best bring opposites together. What is fascinating is that people of a certain spiritual and moral mood are engaged in hustle, so the connections and meetings that usually occur due to an amazing dance, as a rule, are not fleeting and transient, but, on the contrary, extremely serious and fateful.

In custody

As a result, we found out with you what a hustle is and what meaning is hidden in it. Also, I would like to separately note that, despite the fact that other dance styles actively influenced the hustle, none of them could completely absorb it. He easily managed to maintain his individual originality and great entertainment. It, as before, is aimed at closed and open joint management, emotional support. Absolute freedom in hustle movements and perfect harmony in the soul are, perhaps, the most important and especially valuable qualities of this dance.

Story

There are several hypotheses about the origin of the Hustle.

Hypothesis one. The progenitor of the hustle (more precisely, of all its versions performed on three and six counts) should be considered the Latin American hustle. Life was given to him by street dancers from among the numerous gypsies and Hispanics (mainly Cubans) in the southern part of the US state of Florida. In an attempt to adapt their dance skills (sourced from salsa and West Coast Swing) to the disco rhythms that were wildly popular in the early 1970s, the dancers created a dance that, like West Coast Swing, four beats of a measure are performed in three movements (Latin American hustle is performed in six counts “one-two-and-three-four-five-and-six” - 1-2-&3-4-5-&6). The resulting dance was first known as disco swing ("disco swing"), and in New York it was considered a variation of the West Coast swing ("West Coast Swing").

Hypothesis two (Maria Torres). The end of the seventies of the twentieth century was marked in New York by an unheard-of "discomania". The fashion for new melodies spawned a new dance every two weeks. After two weeks, the whimsical dance was forgotten, but some of its elements were inherited by the successor. All this went on from 1978 to 1982. In the early eighties, slower melodies became popular, the performance of the previous dance movements at the same tempo led to the fact that four movements had to be done under three beats, so a restructuring of the dance was required (began to be performed in three counts). This is how the hustle itself appeared, and those of its variations that are customary to dance in four counts are later deviations from the standard.

There is a canonical history of the Hustle as presented by the International Hustle Dance Association, as well as in a Russian translation.

In the late 1960s and throughout the 1970s, discotheques with high quality sound and twinkling lights became popular entertainment in Europe and America. In the early 1970s, disco dancing was generally improvisational, similar to the "Rock" dance style performed by pop stars of the day (such as The Jackson Five). Afro hairstyles, flared trousers, platform shoes - such was the crazy fashion of the youth of that time. A small group of young people and teenagers formed their own subculture in New York: competing in many discos in various dance competitions, most performed the aforementioned "Rock".
[…]

In early 1973, at The Grand Ballroom, a woman performs an untitled pair dance. Regular 6 count step with simple basic movements including inside and outside single turns. This was the birth of the dance that would later be called the Hustle. Young people in the club notice and are interested in the new couples dance because it is romantic, quite simple, and besides this is a great opportunity to meet a girl!

In Latino discos of the time, including The Corso, Barney Goo Goo's and The Ipanema, disco music filled the time between live bands. Couple dances such as Mambo, Salsa and Cha-Cha, Bolero were already popular in these clubs. […] There is a borrowing of intricate movements from Mambo. There are multiple turns and "strings" in the dance. The dance begins to be called "Rope Hustle" or "Latino Hustle".

In the USSR, the hustle appeared, according to various estimates, in the late 70s or early 80s. There is no dispute that in the early 80s the hustle was already danced at the Nabla disco at Moscow State University.

One of the first documentary evidence of the presence of a hustle in the USSR is a fragment of the film "Beloved Woman of the Mechanic Gavrilov" - a scene in a restaurant (Sergey Spiridonov, a stage participant).

Hustle main account

According to the same story, the hustle was born in increments of a simple six counts of "1-2-3-4-5-6". Influenced by Latin American dances, and above all Mambo, a "ball change" is added to the step, the dance count becomes "1-2-3 & 4-5-6". There was also a kind of dance with a simple count of four "1-2-3-4". However, beginning in 1975, influenced by the trend to make the dance more spectacular in competitions and public performances, the "1-2-3 & 4-5-6" part was dropped from the "1-2-3 & 4-5-6" count and only the "&4" part was used. -5-6" or equivalently "&1-2-3".

In Russia, until the 2000s, the account "1-2-3-4" prevailed. This account was introduced as the main one for the initial training of hustle by Vadim Savko in 1993.

Currently hustle in America and disco-fox in Europe are danced to the beat of "1-2-&3". The dancers who started participating in international competitions also brought with them the European score “1-2-&3”. At present, Russian sports competitions in hustle and disco-fox are dominated by the account "1-2-&3" for fast tunes and "1-2-3&" for slow ones, although both accounts are still popular in social tournaments and discos, which are danced in accordance with the sounding music and depending on the skills of the dancer.

Sports Hustle in Russia

Despite the fact that the hustle is a social dance and competitions in it were held more like disco entertainment, over time, competitions of a more sporting nature also appeared. The first regular Hustle competition in Russia was the Hustle Virtuosi competition held in 1995 (organized by the Dance College Club, leaders - Vadim Savko and Marina Rukavitsyna, Moscow State University, Moscow), which at that time brought together about 70 participants. The competition was held according to the rules of the Hustle Usa Championship, most of the branches are still used in competitions.

The main divisions at competitions in hustle held in Russia and CIS countries since November 2008:

  • sports hustle/disco fox/disco swing;
  • hustle freestyle;
  • hustle jack and jill;
  • show hustle;
  • double hustle;
  • ladies hustle.

Hustle jack-n-jill is a branch with a change of partners after each entry and music unknown to the participants in advance. In this department, dancers must show the ability to lead (lead) and interact in pairs, as well as the ability to interpret music on the fly. (Rules for holding competitions in the Hustle Jack-n-Jill department)

At the moment, there are 5 classes in the sports hustle (A - the highest, E - the initial). To move to the next class, it is necessary, starting from the E class, to win prizes in competitions and earn points.

On a warm summer evening, you are walking along the embankment of the Moskva River near Andreevsky Bridge. And suddenly you hear music and see how, under the open sky, on a boardwalk, couples are spinning to the incendiary rhythms of disco. What kind of people are gathered here, and what kind of dance are they performing?

This is Hustle. A very beautiful dance, which is quite easy to learn.

Hustle is a modern pair dance for a wide range of people of all ages, non-professionals.

In English, "hustle" is "turmoil, hustle", which very well conveys the atmosphere in which it is usually performed. The word also has the meaning "energetic movements". And that's exactly how they should be here! Remember the incendiary dances of the heroes of the films "Dirty Dancing" and "Saturday Night Fever" when they danced the hustle?

How is hustle different from other dances?

First, it is very easy to master. Four uncomplicated steps (right forward - left forward - right back - left back) are superimposed with all kinds of hand movements, turns, "ropes", supports that make the hustle beautiful and diverse. Having mastered the basic elements, you can combine them at your discretion and each time create a new unique dance depending on the music and mood.

In order to learn how to move more or less tolerably, only two months are enough (about 16 lessons). Perhaps no other pair dance can be learned in such a short time.

Secondly, hustle can be performed to almost any modern music from latin to rap.

Finally, it is a very democratic dance. People of all ages are engaged in it: from twelve to ninety years. At hustle discos, you will not surprise anyone with the fact that not only a man invites a woman, but also a woman invites a man.

History of the Hustle

Hustle originated in the United States in the 1970s. It was based on mamba, as well as other Latin American dances (for example, salsa, swing).

“Hustle refers to swing dances that have African American roots. This style arose with the advent of disco music, which made it possible to dance to it in pairs. And the dances that were present in America in the 70s and 80s were mixed in the hustle,” says Rukavitsyna Marina, hustle teacher.

The hustle was brought to Russia by foreign students in the mid-1980s. Our guys quickly mastered it. So within the walls of Moscow State University. M.V. Lomonosov began the history of this dance in our country.

In the 90s, after the collapse of the USSR, the popularity of the hustle grew rapidly. From 1994 to 2000, he conquered many dance floors in the capital and began his further victorious march across Russia. From Moscow, the dance quickly migrated to St. Petersburg, Yekaterinburg and other cities. Associations of professionals emerged: the Russian and Moscow Hustle Federations. Local competitions began to be held regularly, and once a year - the Russian Hustle Championship.

Now couples from more than 30 cities of the country come to the competition. There are hustle schools in Ufa, Vladivostok, Kursk, Ivanovo, Yaroslavl, Barnaul and many other cities of the country. In Moscow alone, there are more than 20 clubs where hustle is taught.

Our dancers have the opportunity (of course, if there are funds for such a trip) to take part in international hustle competitions. By the way, Russian couples win prizes at international competitions.

Hustle types

In America, there are a huge number of types of hustle. They dance for three, six, 12 counts. In our country, there is no such big difference between the types of dance, but there are some modifications of it. There are two main types of hustle in Russia: three and four counts. They differ only in the nature of the main step, all other movements are the same. And most hustlers are proficient in both techniques.

In addition, slow (romantic) hustle is danced to slow music, and fast hustle is danced to fast energetic rhythms.

At the competitions you can see other interesting types of dance. A show hustle is a specially staged number. Particular emphasis is placed on the spectacularity of the dance, memorable costumes, originality of the production.

In a double hustle, a "couple" consists of three people. Usually this is a partner who leads two partners at the same time. Less common is a trio of two young men and one girl. Most often, pre-prepared staged dances are performed in this way.

There is even a lady's hustle, which is danced by two girls.

Why do you need a Hustle?

First, in order to learn to control your body. In a couple of months of classes, you can acquire grace and smoothness of movements, good posture, and, subject to long and regular attendance at training, a slender and toned figure.

Agree: the ability to dance beautifully in a pair will never be superfluous either at an ordinary disco, or at a friendly party, or on vacation in a good company.

Secondly, the people who dance the hustle are a certain "party" where everyone knows each other. By attending classes and hustle discos, you can find a lot of new acquaintances.

"I really wanted to dance in pairs, but once I went to ballroom dancing, I realized that it was not mine. Then I was offered to look at hustle classes - and I caught fire. Hustle is a mixture of different dances. If there are strict patterns in ballroom dancing, then here you can improvise. It's more dynamic, freer. That's what I liked about it. What did these classes give me? A lot! I learned to dance beautifully, expanded my social circle, met new interesting people, "says Olga Morozova, who is already engaged in hustle fifth year.

Thirdly, this is a good way to get rid of complexes and increase self-esteem, especially for those who are timid in relationships with the opposite sex.

Finally, the hustle gives a woman a great opportunity to get to know a man. Who knows, maybe your dance partner will eventually become your life partner?

Having originated in the 70s and 80s in America, the hustle has not lost its relevance to this day. In the USA, it is taught in some schools, colleges and even universities (for example, at Yale University). At Moscow State University Lomonosov, it has become a good tradition to teach this dance to students during winter and summer camps.

Hustle has long been a part of many people's lives. Every day he has new admirers. And who knows, maybe in the near future one of your loved ones or you yourself will fall under the spell of this wonderful dance.
